Piedmont

The soils of this region are typically red Brunswick shale.  Most streams (except those in the northern piedmont) lack good substrates and therefore possess a rather poor Odonata fauna.  Agriculture and more recently suburban development have severely impacted available aquatic habitat in this part of the state.  It is no surprise therefore that the piedmont possesses the smallest species list of the four provinces.  For the most part, species occurring in this region can be considered cosmopolitan. It should be noted however that some counties (Hunterdon in particular) are under-surveyed so additional species are waiting to be discovered.
