Highlands

The highlands is a region of mountainous terrain once important as a source of iron ore and other minerals.  Its glacial ponds and forest seepage streams are home to many state rare species.  Parts of the highlands remain under-surveyed (Passaic County for instance).  Unfortunately this region is under great pressure from suburban development.  In spite of these pressures the region still possesses vast areas of open space which protects some of the states best lakes and streams.  Within these pristine habitats one might glimpse the rare Tiger Spiketail or the breathtaking Spatterdock Darner.
