Coastal Plain

The largest physiographic region in New Jersey, the coastal plain is a vast area of low elevation with little topographic variation.  At the center of this province are the Pinelands, an area dominated by Pitch Pines and Scrub Oaks.  The vast Pinelands and surrounding environs are filled with sphagnum bogs and tea colored streams.  Many of the state's most uncommon odes, such as Banner Clubtail, are found only in these special habitats.  If you plan to probe too deeply into the pines be warned that a 4WD is a must.  The sugar sand roads of this region are notorious for swallowing vehicles.  Due to its size and somewhat inaccessible nature we suspect that additional species will eventually be discovered here.
